The second Tuesday in August usually means it's National Night Out, and that was the case in many cities around the nation. But the decision was made months ago to hold the Alton event later in the year in order to avoid the heat and humidity that traditionally socks itself in during the middle of summer. Alton Police Department Public Information Officer Emily Hejna says this year's kickoff party has been scheduled for September 30.
National Night Out is an annual summer event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watches and various police precincts assemble anti-crime rallies along with local business and civic organizations. Officials say National Night Out has proven to be an effective tool in fighting crime and improving and relationships between officers and the community.
