It's the oldest Memorial Day Parade in the country, and this morning, the Alton Memorial Day Parade will step off from the Alton Middle School parking lot for the 146th consecutive year. It starts at 10am, and you can hear live coverage right here on Z-1570, anchored by Mark Ellebracht and Mike Montgomery.
Parade committee member Stacey Ebrey says this is the oldest parade in the country, and that occasionally brings in a guest from long distance to participate in the parade. The longest distance traveled this year is by the Henry Ford High School in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
She says there will be a ceremony following the parade at the cemetery for the first time in a half-dozen years. It will be a cooperative effort with the Avenue of Flags organization, featuring an invocation, a keynote speaker, and music.
