2011 was another year that saw municipalities around Illinois struggling to balance budgets, with the state delinquent in making its required payments, and pension funding issues continuing to play a major role. Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst says volunteers have helped with projects that have garnered the city over $187,000 in grant money through the Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency Committee.
But, he says the budget is very tight, having to do more with less.
He says the city has been able to save more than $500,000 on electricity by shopping around for power. Hoechst reminds that small business is the backbone of any economy, and encourages all Altonians to shop local whenever possible.
