The City of Alton doesn't need much more equipment to add ambulance service as part of the Alton Fire Department. Most of the equipment is already carried by fire department vehicles, and the Fire department already has firefighters licensed as EMT-Paramedics and EMT-Basics that respond to emergency calls but as of now they do not transport patients.
The city kicked around the idea of launching a city-run ambulance service a number of years ago, but that was met with enough opposition to kill the plan. Alton Mayor Brant Walker tells The Big Z that has not been the case this time.

The hope is to have the service up and running by April 1, 2017, with one ambulance based at each of the city's two firehouses.
