A 28-year-old Alton man has has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with a fatal motorcycle accident at the entrance to the Clark Bridge in September of 2013. Jeffrey A. Rynders admitted to driving the car that struck and killed 66-year-old Gary L. Wright of Wood River, and sent his wife Lora to a St. Louis hospital in critical condition.
Lora died of her injuries a couple of months after the crash. The wreck occurred at the entrance to the southbound lanes entering the bridge when the car apparently struck the motorcycle. Rynders was detained by passersby on the parking lot of Riverbend Billiards, which is located down the embankment from where the accident happened, after Rynders apparently attempted to flee. Rynders pleaded guilty in June to two counts of Aggravated DUI Involving Death. He will be required to serve at least 85% of his sentence.
