An Alton man will be heading to prison following a guilty verdict in a murder trial. 22-year-old Marcus A. Baldwin of the 1,000 block of Alton Pointe has been found guilty of a single count of first degree Murder and two counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm in the fatal shooting of 19-year old Dantavier Thompson in July of last year.
Thompson was shot once in the head and died at the scene. His car crashed through a gate and came to rest on the playground at Lovejoy School. Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons:
The jury took less than two hours to return their verdict on Thursday. The murder charge is punishable by 20-60 years in prison, while the Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm is a Class X felony - due to the proximity of the school - punishable by 6-30 years. Sentencing is expected after the first of the year.
