Every year since 2008, Alton has been recogniozed as a "Cool City." The designation recognizes cities that take the lead in becoming more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Last Wednesday, Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst formally signed the Illinois Cool Cities Local Sustainability Protection Agreement 2015 Goals, which outlines various goals and strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2015.
The city has already completed or studied many of the items listed in the agreement. Mayor's Assistant Matt Asselmeier says they will be teaming with their partners next month at the Mississippi Earthtones Festival at the Riverfront Amphitheater to educate the public on what is being done and how they can participate.
Mayor Tom Hoechst boasts the Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency Committee has secured grants in excess of $180,000 with a budget of zero dollars. Accepting the Agreement from the City of Alton was Christine Favilla of the Piasa Palisades Group of the Sierra Club.
