Alton’s Fire Department is in the top 2% of all fire departments in the United States, according to Mayor Brant Walker. He bases that on the latest ISO, or Insurance Service Office Public Protection Classification, which is now at a 2. The grading scale ranges from 1 being the best and 10 being the worst.
Of the 49,000 fire departments graded in the United States, only 751 have achieved Class 2. Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says that means you could be eligible for a discount on your insurance.

He says some of the changes that led to the better rating were to have the East Alton Fire Department respond to fires in Alton to provide a third pumper company, more in-depth public safety inspections of buildings with fixed fire protection systems, and a partnership with Illinois American Water to identify where additional hydrants are needed and then color coding them so firefighters know how much water they are capable of pumping.
