A Dog Park for Alton is in the works, and while it's not a done deal just yet, supporters are in the process of making it happen at a current city park. There have been several fundraisers to help the effort along, including a Mardi Gras Pet Parade and several "Yappy Hours" at downtown Alton establishments. The organization is in the process of filing for 501C-3 status.
Rhonda Lewis, Deputy Executive Director of the Alton Park and Recreation Department, says the group has been working with officials with the city of Alton Park and Recreation Department, and it appears Russell Commons Park is getting closer to becoming the Dog Park.
Another location that had been mentioned is the landfill on Alby Street, but Russell Commons became the apparent front runner several months ago. In addition to money from the Dog Park Task Force, money has been set aside from the PEP Grant and also the Riverfront Park fund for fencing.
