An Alton doctor has had her license suspended for a year after investigators say she failed to notify authorities about suspected abuse of one of her young patients who later died at the hands of his abusive father.   Dr. Gita Malur practiced out of Alton Pediatrics on the Alton Memorial Hospital campus, but was also on the medical staff at St. Anthony's Hospital.  Her suspension begins June 3.

The disciplinary action stems from a 2009 formal complaint after the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation learned she had failed to notify authorities about the suspected abuse.  She had been treating 2-year-old Maxwell Eyer who eventually died in December of 2007 after suffering multiple bruises, burns and fractured sternum.  The cause of death was ruled to be blunt head trauma and ruled to be a homicide.  The child's father, Johnny Garcia of East Alton, pleaded guilty in 2009 to first degree murder and is serving a 44 year prison sentence.  The child's mother, Lindsey Eyer, and Garcia's girlfriend at the time, Jeanie Lansdon, were also charged and pleaded guilty for their role in failing to do anything to prevent the abuse.  Dr. Malur's suspension begins on June 3rd.
