The 175th Anniversary celebration in Alton is ramping up with some events already in the books, several still to come, and merchandise on sale to commemorate the recognition. The River Bend Growth Association, Alton Convention and Visitors' Bureau and several other organizations have joined the city in the planning and promotion process.
CVB Spokesman Suzanne Halbrook says no good anniversary would be complete without souveniers.
One unique keepsake may be an actual license plate, if approved by the Secretary of State. It has received verbal approval, but the official "OK" has not come through yet. The city is planning a signature event that will take place on the city's actual anniversary, which is July 21st. That event is will include steamboats, fireworks and music at a festival at Riverfront Park.
