The next time the federal government decides to close military bases, states hope they’ll close somewhere else – not in their own backyard.
Recalling the fallout from the closure of Chanute Air Force Base near Rantoul and the anxiety over the future of Springfield-based planes, State Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) says he is happy to serve on a committee trying to protect Illinois' assets while diverting the pain to some other state.

“These are installations that we have needed to downsize from the height of the Cold War,” says Butler, noting he came of age after Vietnam and before 9/11.
