The Alton City Council Committee of the Whole received confirmation of what many already suspected - payments to the police and firefighter's pension fund continue to be a major drain on the city's budget.  The numbers were presented by the actuarial firm of AON Hewitt as part of its Valuation Report that covers the period of April 1, 2015 to March 31 of this year.

While lawmakers at the state level have been charged with finding a solution to the pension problems facing municipalities across the state, Alton is one of many that continues to make cuts where it can, but see little if any progress according to 1st Ward Alderman Jim Ryan.

In other Committee business, the city will be pursuing legal action that often leads to demolition proceedings against three properties: 1311 E. 5th Street, 2306 Sunset, and 2305 Amelia.  The committee also approved road closures Downtown on March 12 to facilitate a St. Patrick's Day event.  The full council meets tomorrow night at 7:30 to deal with these and other topics.
