Pat BradyHe used to lead the Republican Party in Illinois. Now he’s leading the charge for same-sex marriage.   The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois has hired Pat Brady’s lobbying firm to push for same-sex marriage legislation in the Illinois House of Representatives.  Brady resigned his party post in May after months of controversy after he publicly supported marriage equality. Ed Yohnka of the ALCU of Illinois says they’re not worried about his involvement costing them any votes.

“For us this is really a vehicle for helping us add people to the vote,” said Yohnka. “We’re not revisiting old scandals or old kerfuffles.”  Brady was recommended by Steve Schmidt, the man who headed the presidential campaign for U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008, and who is now in charge of ACLU’s national effort to gain Republican support for same-sex marriage.  Yohnka believes that with Brady’s involvement, a bill will be passed in the House during the October veto session.
