A tragic accident during an emergency call has claimed the life of the fire chief from the Macoupin County town of Medora. 59-year-old Kenneth Lehr was killed when a fire truck that was backing up to clear the scene for a helicopter landing, struck him. Lehr was pronounced dead at the scene.
Medora fire crews were responding to a medical emergency yesterday afternoon after 2pm to property on Illinois Route 111 in rural Chesterfield. As firefighters were clearing the scene for a medical helicopter to land, a fire truck driven by 46-year-old Patrick Cullum of Medora, struck Lehr as it was backing up, causing Lehr to slip under the truck. The Macoupin County Corner pronounced Lehr dead at the scene at 2:45pm. Illinois State Police is reconstructing the crash scene as part of its investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
