Problems with the federal government’s health insurance exchange could be scaring away potential buyers on Illinois’ marketplace. Jennifer Koehler, director of the Get Covered Illinois site, says in its first month, 400,000 unique visitors came to the site, and another 200,000 used the screener tool to find out if they’re eligible to buy a policy, while the site’s call center received 18,000 calls.

Many of those people seemed to stop at that point, however, as Koehler says only 30,000 applications have been completed, and only 1,370 people have completed the process and selected a plan. “Even though those numbers are low basically due to the federal website continuously being under repair,” Koehler said, “we like to look at the help desk numbers and also the data surrounding how many folks have visited our landing page,” said Koehler.
Koehler says the number of applications should pick up as the advertising campaign for the marketplace begins in December. That campaign emphasizes the Dec. 15 deadline for applicants to begin receiving coverage on Jan. 1.
