About this event

The Alton Middle School Baseball Field (and former Alton High Field) will be dedicated  in memory of Wayne D. ‘Bud’ Tyler.

There be a ceremony just prior to the Alton Middle School baseball game.

Tyler was a long-time, beloved teacher and coach in Alton. He began his teaching career in the Alton School District in 1958. He coached athletics at the junior high level and began coaching baseball at Alton High School in 1962. Tyler retired in 1988.
Due to his record of success, Tyler was inducted into the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame in 1982.

His Alton teams produced five Southwestern Conference Championships, six district championships and made three Final Four state championship appearances.

Superintendent Mark Cappel noted the recognition is worthy given Tyler’s sizeable contributions to students and the community over his years of service.

“Wayne Tyler was a coaching icon in Alton. It’s impossible not to think of him anytime you think of Alton baseball," Cappel said. "He was very dedicated to his student-athletes and this was evident in the success of his teams. We are honored to have his memory honored through naming our field after him.”

Tyler died on March 17, 2015. Members of his family will attend the dedication ceremony to celebrate the dedication. Family, friends, former students, players and the general public are invited to attend the ceremony.
