Each year the Treasurer’s Office attempts to contact property owners with past due taxes, this is done by certified letter and publication in local newspapers. Madison County allows residents to pay in four installments, the last of which was due Dec. 10. “If you have unpaid taxes, it’s urgent to get them paid quickly to avoid the tax sale,” Slusser said. “It’s important to note that only unpaid taxes are being sold at the tax sale, not individual properties.”

On Monday, Feb 24, Madison County will hold their annual delinquent tax sale which is responsible for collecting all past due taxes.

Property owners who did not receive a property tax bill should call the Treasurer’s Office. Per Illinois law, regardless of whether a tax bill is received, a taxpayer is still responsible for paying the property taxes.
