HONOLULU – Reagan Curtis homered twice, including a go-ahead blast in the fifth inning Saturday, as SIUE softball defeated Hawaii 8-5.

The Cougars now stand at 1-1 after day one of the Hawaii Spring Fling and hold an overall record of 6-6. Earlier in the day, SIUE dropped an 8-0 contest to California in five innings.
"They did a great job of staying in the game and then breaking back," said SIUE Interim Head Coach Jessica Jones.
In SIUE's victory over Hawaii, Curtis provided home runs No. 2 and No. 3 for the season. She finished with three hits and three RBIs.
Curtis said she made an adjustment after her first at-bat in the first inning resulted in a ground out. She then hit Hawaii pitching for a double in the fourth, a home run to left center field in the fifth and a solo homer in the seventh.
"The whole lineup was hitting well," said Curtis. "It was a great overall team win."
SIUE collected 11 hits overall with Curtis joining Alyssa Heren with three hits. The Cougars added two hits each from Sydney Bina and Abby Marlow.
Emily Ingles earned her fourth victory of the season in going the distance for the Cougars. She fanned eight and allowed just five hits.
Jones said the three SIUE players on the roster from Hawaii (Kalei Kaneshiro, Alana Cobb-Adams, and Sammie Ofoia) wanted to play well in their home state.
"They wanted to make sure they represented SIUE well when they played Hawaii," added Jones.
SIUE continues play at the Hawaii Spring Fling with a single game Sunday against Utah. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
"I'm proud of the way they are battling," said Jones. "We are still trying to find the lineup, but the good thing is that we have a lot of depth and options."
