AVON - On June 25, 2019, at approximately 1:58 p.m., Illinois State Police (ISP) officers responded to a residence in rural Avon, Illinois (Fulton County) to assist the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO). Four FCSO Deputies responded to a battery and disturbance call at the rural Avon residence. Shortly upon arrival, Fulton County Deputy Troy Chisum was shot by a suspect in the residence; Deputy Chisum succumbed to his injuries.

Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the ISP, responded to the scene to assist the FCSO, at which point the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence. At approximately 8:20 a.m. on June 26, 2019, the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was being transported to McDonough County Jail where he is being held pending formal charges. The suspect has been identified as Nathan Woodring (M/42) of Avon, Illinois.

ISP officers, including ISP SWAT personnel and ISP crisis negotiators, as well as various other law enforcement agencies, first responders, and public safety partners, assisted in various aspects of the incident including the following: Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Avon Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Macomb Police Department, Western Illinois University GIS Department, McDonough County Sheriff’s Office, Farmington Police Department, City of Canton Police Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Buckheart Fire Department, Fairview Fire Department, Havana Rural Fire Department, Cuba Fire Department, Avon Fire Department, Fulton County Emergency Medical Association, Fulton County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, Fulton County Salvation Army, Fulton County Public Information Office, and Fulton County Board Chairman – Jason Strandberg.

“On behalf of the Illinois State Police, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Fulton County Deputy Chisum’s family, friends, and extended family at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office,” stated ISP Acting Director Brendan F. Kelly. “This is the second time this year the Illinois State Police has safely apprehended an alleged cop killer. Once again, the men and women of the Illinois State Police displayed exceptional professionalism, patience and persistence as they worked side by side with our brothers and sisters through another dark and difficult moment. Mercifully, this incident was concluded with no further harm to first responders, and this defendant can now be brought to justice,” concluded Kelly.

The public is reminded that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law
