Boys Basketball Action at the Redbirds Tip-Off Classic on Wednesday night, the Alton Redbirds led after one quarter and never looked back as they handed the Althoff Crusaders a 81 - 55 loss. That said, Alton gave up 35 points in the second half. But they also scored 41 in the final two frames to take that contest.
Alton saw scoring from ten different players, led by Senior Donovan Clay and his 21 points. Junior Andrew Jones netted 16 points, and Senior Malik Smith scored 10 on the night.
Alton will play at home against Riverview Gardens (MO) on Friday night.
Other scores in boys basketball from Wednesday night:
O'Fallon 44 to 33 over Carnahan (MO) at the Redbirds Tip-Off Classic.
Mascoutah downed Columbia 59 to 53 at Wesclin.
Waterloo edged host Wesclin 32 to 29.
At Centralia (IL), DeSmet (MO) defeated Jerseyville 66 to 49.
Taylorville took it to Granite City 73 to 45.
At Metro East Lutheran, Marissa won 53 to 26 over Dupo.
It was Litchfield 57 to 46 over Waterloo-Gibault at Metro East.
And Valmayer was a 67 - 60 winner against East Alton-Wood River at the Metro East Lutheran tournament.
The Civic Memorial Eagles lost to Triad, the final was 55 to 46.
And Collinsville defeated Carterville at Herrin by a score of 66 to 29.
In the NHL, the St. Louis Blues began a home-and-home series in Nashville against the first place Predators on Wednesday night with a 4 to 1 loss. The debut of Interim Head Coach Craig Berube didn't quite go as hoped, as the Blues looked pretty good through the first period, despite going down early 1 to 0. Rookie Forward Robert Thomas scored his first NHL goal in the first period, for the bright spot in the game for the Blues. The two teams come back to St. Louis to the Enterprise Center for a Friday night game in the home-and-home series. The puck will drop at 7:00 pm.
