Prep Basketball

Marquette travels to DuQuoin Tuesday to take on Pinckneyville in one of two Class 2A sectional semifinal games. You can hear that game live at 7 pm Tuesday night. Nashville battles West Frankfort in the second semifinal on Wednesday. The two winners meet Friday in the sectional championship.

Meanwhile, the Class 3A Regionals begin tomorrow night with a live double header on the Big Z. At 6 p.m. Civic Memorial takes on Roxana at the Breese Central Regional. That game will be followed by action between East Alton Wood River and Breese Central at about 7:30.

Prep Wrestling

The #7 ranked Edwardsville Tigers' season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the state wrestling tournament Saturday in Bloomington. The Tigers lost to #6 DeKalb 43-27 in the team event. The Tigers end their season at 27-1.

College Basketball

The Fighting Illini honored its 1988-89 Final Four team's 30th anniversary yesterday and Penn State spoiled the celebration with an 83-76. Illinois is now 10-17 on the season and heads to Indiana to take on #12 Purdue on Wednesday night.

The SIUE Cougars shot 53% from the field, including 41% from 3-point range and were 10-of-13 from the free throw line, but still couldn't hold off Belmont, losing 97-75 Saturday. the Cougars dropped to 9-19; Belmont improved to 23-4 on the season. Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars dropped to 12-15, losing to Belmont 87-54.

The LCCC Lady Trailblazers battled No. 6-ranked Lincoln Land at the River Bend Arena Saturday but lost to Loggers 79-75. LCCC is 14-8 on the season. Meanwhile, the LCCC men's team scored 62 points in the second half to overcome a 16-point deficit and beat Kaskaskia 96-83.

The St. Louis University Billikens fell to 17-10 losing to Dayton 70-61. Meanwhile the Lady Billikens fell to Davidson 60-57.

Mizzou lost a 9-point lead in the second half and fell to Florida 64-60. The Tigers are now 12-14 on the season.


Sammy Blais scored in the sixth round of the shootout to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Alexander Steen scored in regulation for St. Louis and Jordan Binnington stopped 31 shots and then five more in the shootout to improve to 14-2-1. The Blues take on Minnesota on the road tonight at 6 p.m.


The Cardinals banged out 20 hits as they opened their Spring Training season yesterday with a 11-1 win over Miami. Fifteen of those hits came from players on the Triple A roster as most of the regulars sat out the first day. The Cardinals take on Washington at noon today.

The Cardinals also signed Jose Martinez to a 2-year $3.25 million contract Saturday and announced the Miles Mikolas would be the starting pitcher against Milwaukee on opening day.

The Cubs also won their spring training opener 8-4 over the Brewers. Chicago takes on San Francisco this afternoon.
