Roxana senior Alex Maguire and Edwardsville senior Noah Surtin fell just short in their bids for state wrestling titles yesterday at the State Farm Center in Champaign. Maguire, the No. 2 state-ranked grappler in Class 1A at 152 pounds, lost a tough 4-3 decision to No. 1 Brody Ivey of Sterling Newman Central Catholic. Maguire finished the season a 39-5 and becomes Roxana's 22nd state medalist and 7th to win multiple medals after finishing third last year.

Edwardsville's Surtin was also denied a state championship in the Class 3A losing an 8-4 decision to Matt Ramos of Lockport in the title match at 120 pounds. Surtin was a defending state champion and finished the season at 50-2 after going 51-1 last year. He becomes the Tigers first 3-time state medalist and his 183 career wins ranks 13th all-time in the state. Joining Surtin as a medalist for Edwardsville was junior heavyweight Lloyd Reynolds, who placed sixth. The Tigers team will battle in sectional play Tuesday.

The Tyus twins from Civic Memorial both medaled in Class 2A. Caleb Tyus finished third at 120 pounds and ended the year with a 46-3 record. Caine Tyus took sixth place at 126 pounds and ended the year at 39-11.

Zeke Waltz became the Jersey Panthers’ second state medalist after his fifth-place performance at 152 pounds.

In the Class 1A tournament, East Alton-Wood River senior Jake Erslon took fourth-place at 170 pounds and ended the season at 44-8.


Alton senior Ashley Westbrook averaged better than 198 per game to finish 28th in the girls state bowling tournament at Cherry Bowl in Rockford Saturday. Meanwhile, Edwardsville senior Sydney Sahuri finished 57th with a 186 average. Rebecca Haderman of Harlem led all 72 bowlers in the field with a two-day average of 222 and took the individual state championship. O’Fallon won the team state championship.

No. 5 Marquette ended it's regular season with a victory over East Atlon-Wood River. both teams now get ready for regional play.

The LCCC Trailblazers stopped a 6-game losing streak with a 77-58 victory over Southeastern Illinois Saturday. Zivan Clark was one of four Trailblazers in double figures with a team-high 18 points.

SIUE lost 73-69 to UT Martin Saturday at the Vadalabene Center. The Cougars dropped to 8-18. UT Martin also beat the SIUE women's team 75-48. The Lady Cougars fell to 11-14.

The Blues increased their season-high winning streak to nine games Saturday with a 3-0 win over Colorado. Vladimir Tarasenko, Zach Sanford and Jaden Schwartz scored for the Blues. Jake Allen made 32 saves and picked up his second shutout of the season. St. Louis hasn't allowed a goal in 127 minutes, 14 seconds. The Blues try for a franchise tying 10-game winning streak this afternoon against Minnesota.
