Oilers fans are smiling today, as they have a new state champion to congratulate. East Alton Wood River wrestler Zac Blasioli is the Illinois State Champion in the 132 pound weight class at the 1A level. Blasioli faced Trey Hild of Petersburg in the Championship Match in Champaign Saturday night. Hild featured a 51-1 record going into the final match. In a back and forth test of wills, Blasioli came out on top with a 7-5 decision to claim the state crown.
Blasioli's Oiler teammate Drew Sobol lost his semi-final match on Friday night. He was pitted against Austin Weaver of Stanford in the 3rd place match. Sobol would fall to Weaver in a 16-10 decision, finishing in fourth place at the 106 pound weight class.
Belleville Althoff wrestlers walked away Saturday night with three championships at the 1A level. Chase Bittle won the title at 126 pounds. Danny Braunagel won a 10-4 decision to claim the 152-pound class crown. And Danny's brother Zach Braunagel won a 7-2 decision to take home top honors at 170 pounds.
