The University of Illinois baseball squad picked up its 24th straight victory yesterday with a Big Ten win over Rutgers in Champaign.

The final, 28-13 in favor of the Fighting Illini.


Illinois:  43-6-1


Illinois tied Texas A&M for the longest winning streak in the nation this season (24-wins in a row).  The 28 runs are the most for Illini baseball since putting up 32 runs in a game at Illinois Field back in 2000 


Illini hi-lites:

  • 11-run 8th inning
  • 2B Reid Roper (Harrisburg, IL) went 3-4, 2-HR’s, scored a school record 6-runs, 6-RBI’s, grand slam capped off the 11-run 8th inning
  • Catcher Jason Goldstein – 5-5, grand slam HR, 4-RBI’s
  • Illinois hit a season-high 5 home runs (Rutgers launched 6 homers in a losing cause). 


The Fighting Illini wrap up the regular season later this week – hosting Nebraska in a 3-game series starting on Thursday (Thursday – thru – Saturday).


The Big Ten baseball tournament starts next week in Minnesota.  The conference tourney runs Wednesday, May 20 thru Sunday, May 24.
