Holiday prep basketball tournaments continued around the Riverbend on Saturday. We had a boy's doubleheader from the Freeburg tournament on the Big Z. In the first game of our twinbill, Jakob Lowrance scored 22 points to guide the Civic Memorial Eagles to a 57-44 victory over Freeburg. The win moves C.M. into the semi-finals where they will meet Southwestern on Monday night.

The second game featured a big win for the Marquette Explorers. Shandon Boone scored 18 points to lead Marquette to a 63-37 win over Lebanon. The victory sealed Marquette's spot in the semifinals where they will square off against Columbia on Monday evening.

Elsewhere, the Roxana Shells split a pair of games on the final day of the Pinckneyville boys tournament. Roxana fell to DuQuoin 40-36 before bouncing back to beat Red Bud 45-35 in the 11th place game. Jerseyville dropped two games including a 47-26 loss to Pinckneyville in the 3rd place game. Carterville topped Gibault, 65-61 in overtime to win the tournament title.

The East Alton-Wood River Oilers suffered their first loss in the Carlinville Boys tournament Saturday, falling 68-59 to Staunton. Mike Stimac scored 18 points and Blake Marks chipped in with 13 points in a losing cause for the Oilers.  Other winners in Carlinville included Gillespie, Mt. Olive and Lincolnwood.

 

There was plenty of girls prep basketball tournament action on Saturday. In Jerseyville, the Allie Troecker's 3-point play with 7 seconds remaining lifted Civic Memorial to a 45-44 win over Collinsville. She finished the game with 26 points.

Four Lady Explorers reached double digits, but it wasn't enough to deliver a win for Marquette at the Lebanon tournament as they fell to Columbia 52-44. Elena Gable scored a team-high 12 points while Brittney Pace added 11. The Explorers also got 10 points each from Caitlin Hanlon and Andria Pace in the loss.

The Alton Lady Redbirds were blown out in their first game at the State Farm Invitational in Jefferson City, Missouri on Saturday, falling to Columbia Hickman 65-24. Alton is back in action this afternoon against Eureka in the consolation bracket.

The Roxana Lady Shells tipped off action at the Buffalo Tri-City tournament, claiming a pair of wins on the first day of play. Roxana beat Ramsey 50-46 in their first game of the day. The Shells blew out Decatur Christian 59-27 in their second appearance in the tournament.

And the East Alton-Wood River Lady Oilers earned a victory in the Carlinville tournament on Saturday, defeating Staunton 50-36. Kari Westbrook scored 23 points while Carly Campbell added 14 points for the Oilers in the win.
