Former Rams running back Lawrence Phillips is dead, having been found unresponsive in his cell early this morning.  The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says officials at Kern Valley State Prison are investigating his apparent suicide.  The 40-year-old had been in a single cell since April of 2013 after he was suspected of killing his cellmate.

He was in the early stages of a trial for the homicide.  Phillips had been in prison since 2008, serving a sentence of more than 31 years after being convicted of choking his girlfriend and driving his car into three teens in 2005.  A graduate of Nebraska, Phillips was the sixth-overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.  He also played for the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.
