The Marquette Explorers special teams unit put their defense in tough spots all night, allowing more than 175 return yards to the visiting Priory Rebels in a 43-0 loss at Public School Stadium. Junior return man John Agnew made defenders miss early and often as he put his team in good field position throughout the contest.

That field position allowed sophomore quarterback Andrew Rund to scamper for three scores and also put him in position to throw a touchdown in the win. Senior running back Dominic Coppola also added a pair of touchdown runs as the Rebels tallied 247 yards of total offense in the victory. Marquette falls to 0-1 on the season and will look for their fist win on the road next week against Quincy Notre Dame.
Meanwhile in Bethalto, quarterback Kyle Kirkpatrick helped the Civic Memorial Eagles soar to a 40-7 win over the visiting Newton Eagles. Kirkpatrick completed 13-of-17 attempts for 222 yards and a pair of scores and broke a long touchdown run just before the end of the first half.
The Eagles took a 32-0 lead into the half and added another touchdown in the third quarter. Newton added a late touchdown to make the final 40-7 in favor of Civic Memorial. The Eagles will try to improve to 2-0 next week on the road against Centralia.
