A long time fixture of Roxana High School athletics has died. Jeff Welker, who coached the Shells football team for a season and remained involved in the program throughout his teaching career, died Monday night at the age of 65.
Welker coached football, girls basketball, and the weight-lifting program at Roxana H.S. He was a longtime Shells assistant football coach under Charlie Raich and Bill Smith.
He also coached the Bunker Hill High School football team, but remained employed as a teacher in Roxana during that time. Welker taught for 37 ½ years in Roxana. Services are being handled by Pitchford Funeral Home and details are listed under OBITUARIES at the top of the page.
Visitation will be from 2 pm to 8 pm on Friday, January 23 at the Roxana High School gymnasium (Larry Milazzo Gym). Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, January 24 also at the gymnasium at Roxana High School.
