The St. Louis Cardinals topped the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday afternoon 3-1. Paul DeJong hit a 2 run homer in the 7th to put the redbirds on top for good, breaking a his nearly hitless streak where he had been 3-43. It was his 9th homer of the season.
The Cardinals also stole 4 bases on the day, from Matt Carpenter, Kolten Wong, Marcell Ozuna and Dexter Fowler.
Starter Dakota Hudson allowed a run on 5 hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Reliever John Gant got the win and he's now 5-0. Jordan Hicks earned his 12th save on the season in a 1-2-3 9th inning.
The Cardinals are on the road this weekend to Chicago to take on the Cubs in a 3-game series. Miles Mikolas (4-5) gets the start for St. Louis this afternoon against Cole Hamels (4-2). Game time 1:20 at Wrigley.
The Cubs and Brewers are tied for 1st and the Cards are now 2.5 games behind in 3rd place.
