Birdman Rising: Conversations Beyond Colonialism
3/23/2018 -
Join us on Friday, March 10th from 6-8pm for the opening reception of "Birdman Walking: Conversations Beyond Colonialism." This show is curated by the SIUE University Museum, featuring Amerindian artifacts from the museum and photographic artworks by guest artist Jeff Thomas.

This exhibit of photographic works by Jeff Thomas and Amerindian artifacts in the SIUE University Museum collection juxtaposes the contemporary and prehistoric local environments, and the peoples who interacted within them. It looks into and beyond colonialism to the pre-colonial glory of the Mississippians in order to create a dialogue about living in a world beyond colonialism today. Thomas’s photographic work encourages this conversation beyond colonialism though his focus on portraiture in Amerindian stone carvings, colonial photography and his own original photographic works. He thus allows the viewer to enter into the common humanity of his subjects, and by placing indigenous ancestors in familiar local landscapes, the Mississippian Birdman rises from the earth to walk with us and inspire new visions.

In the DeToye Student Gallery will be artwork by District 7 Elementary School students. Our exhibits are always open and free to the public, with refreshments available for all visitors. Hope to see you there!
