William Bryant

William S. Bryant, 76, passed away at 2:50 pm, Saturday, May 23, 2015 at his home after a valiant battle against multiple diseases.

He was born in Beatrice, Nebraska on March 11, 1939, the son of the late Dr. Arthur Ralph and the late Margaret Schmitz Bryant.

He married his wife of 52 years, Gay (Pauly) Bryant on September 1, 1962 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She survives.

He was educated in Beatrice schools and graduated from Wentworth Military Academy with an Associate Degree.  Bill received his degree in Civil Engineering from Missouri Science and Technology (formerly Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy) in 1963.  He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.  Bill was employed by Olin Corp in 1964, retiring in 1994 after 30 years as a sanitary, civil, project and senior loss prevention engineer.  After retirement he became a partner in CAM LLC, South Roxana, retiring from that position in 2000.   He was a long time member of Alton Godfrey Rotary Club, Alton Wood River Sportsman’s Club, a life member of the NRA.  Bill was an active member of the Episcopal Parish of Alton where he served various terms on the vestry, as Rector’s warden, parsh treasurer, chalice bearer and acolyte trainer/mentor.  Bill was an avid hunter of ducks, geese, deer and turkey and passionate about his various hunting dogs.  He had a great loyalty to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Margaret Bryant Johnson; two grandsons, William A. Johnson and Bryant P. Johnson of Godfrey; four nephews, Michal A. (Barbara) Bryant of Rolla, Missouri, Dr. Samuel (Lorrie) Bryant of Lincoln, Nebraska, Stephen (Paula) Bucher of the Dallas, Texas area, David Bucher of Dallas, Texas; three nieces, Mariann (Dr. Robert) Culver of Des. Moines, Iowa, Susan (Tim) Taylor of Plano, Texas, Margaret Bucher of Dallas, Texas; many great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends from across the country.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, John Pauly Bryant, his father and mother-in-law, Franklin B. and Gladys Y. Pauly, one brother, Arthur R. Bryant Jr. of Lincoln, Nebraska, one sister, Barbara B. Britton of Mesquite, Texas, and his beloved hunting dog Brut.   

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 10 East Third Street Alton, Illinois. A memorial mass and inurnment will follow with Rev. Gary Goldacker officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Episcopal Parish of Alton.
