William Redden

Wood River |

William "Bill" Redden, 85, passed away at 5:42pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at his residence with his loving family by his side.  He was born on June 8, 1927, the son of the late Hugh and Thelma (Frazier) Redden.  He married the former Helen Wilkinson  on June 11, 1949 and she preceded in death on May 5, 1989.  He then married the former Donna Kemp on November 3, 1990, in Rosewood Heights and became a "bonus" mom to the six D's, and she survives.  Other survivors include three  sons and two daughters in law: Dave and Barb Redden of Edwardsville, Richard Redden of Roxana, Darin and Chandra Redden of Wood River, three daughters and two sons in law: Debby Nicholas of Staunton, Donna K. and Gary Murray of Florissant, Missouri, Diane and Don Ford of Brighton,  eighteen grandchildren: Shawn, Bradley, Alison, Donny, Kelly, Sandy, Rachel, Stephanie, Zach, Becky Jo, Vicky, Donnie, Deanna, Danny, Annie, D.J., Meghan, Maddie, sixteen great grandchildren, two expectant great grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers in law: Marge and Sam Carter of Kuttawa, Kentucky, Jan LeFeber of Chicago, Betty and Frank Pasternak of Fairview Heights, two sisters in law: Betty Redden, Rosemary Redden,  a step son and his wife: David and Annette Dennigmann of Paso Robles, California, and a step daughter and her husband: Dawn and Brian O'Rourke of Peachtree City, Georgia, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and his Wilkinson and Kemp extended families.   

He was formerly employed at Roxana School District #1 for 29 years where he was a physical education teacher, math teacher, health teacher, cross country coach, track coach, and basketball coach.  He loved to golf, he was a perfectionist wood worker, fisherman, coin collector, a competitive Pinochle player, and was an avid Cub fan.  He loved to tease, was fun loving, and a giver with a heart of gold.  His family was #1 to him.  He was an avid sports nut who participated as well and was  an accomplished basketball official.  He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Rosewood Heights for 55 years, serving as a trustee and was on numerous committees.   He served as a Wood River city councilman for 9 years.  His commitment to public service was exemplary. 

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Kristina, and two brothers: Hugh and James.   

In celebration on his life, visitation will be from 3pm to 8pm on Friday, January 18, 2013, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 10 North Center in East Alton.  Visitation will continue from 9am until time of funeral services at 10am on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the church.  Pastor Daryl Fansler and Pastor Edward Weston will officiate.  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 10 North Center in East Alton, Illinois 62024, Redden Scholarship Fund in care of Roxana High School, 401 Chaffer Avenue. Roxana, Illinois 62084, or Unity Hospice,
