Wesley Betts

Wesley Earl Betts, 84, passed away at 8:22 pm Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at his home under the care of Heartland Hospice.

He was born on June 14, 1931, the son of Lark Jackson and Mary Lillian (Schlings) Betts. 

Wesley married Margaret C. Smith on November 17, 1951 in Springfield and she preceded him in death on July 3, 1992.  He married Joyce Elaine Blackmoore on July 4, 1998 and she preceded him in death on January 12, 2006.

He was a Crane Mechanic at Laclede Steel in Alton for 38 year until his retirement in 1992.  He loved hunting and fishing and gardening in Illinois and Florida.

Wesley is survived by a daughter, Helen Betts-Koehler and her partner, Gene Lawrence of Fieldon,  a son, David Betts and his partner, Teddi Bartholomew of Brighton, a son, Lark Betts of Brighton, and son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Carolyn Betts of Brighton; six grandchildren, Stephanie Jones, Joshua Calvert, Rose, Tess and Anna Betts, and Daryl W. Betts; seven great grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bernelda and Bill Burney of Wood River, Alta and Graydon Smith of Carbondale, and Edna Gold of Wood River; two sisters-in-law, Betty Betts of Tamms and Debbie Betts of Bethalto.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Betts, seven brothers and six sisters-in-law, Charles and Jean Betts, Robert and Ruby Betts, John and Ann Betts, Clifford and Lillian Betts, and Lark Betts Jr., Robert and Ruby Betts, and Dwight and Margaret Schilling, four sisters and four brothers-in-law, Mary and Jim Overmeyer, Vernetta and Ralph Henderson, Leona and Harvey Roach, Nevita Betts, a brother-in-law, Larry Gold.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 pm Sunday, January 24, 2016 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Graveside services will be held at 1 pm Monday, January 25, 2016 at St. John’s Cemetery in Dongola, IL with Pastor Lacy Betts officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society the American Heart Association.
