Wanda Harris

Wanda Laray Harris, 88, went to be with Jesus at 9:07 am, Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at her residence with her family by her side.

She was born on November 2, 1926 in Greene County, IL, the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret (Baugh) Becker.

Wanda married Arthur H. Harris on May 29, 1966. He preceded her in death on February 26, 2010.

She was employed at the Owens IL Glass company for over 30 years retiring in 1984. Wanda was a member of the Friendship General Baptist Church in East Alton for over 35 years, where she was also a member of the MaryLee Missionary Society, and a Sunday School teacher for many years. There was not a person in the church that she did not touch. She was very involved with Camp Hugh in Bunker Hill where she was on the board and served as treasurer for them for many years. She also enjoyed painting, sewing, traveling, gardening and crocheting. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by four sons and their spouses: Kevan and Marsha Bennett of Alton, IL, Randy and Brenda Bennett of Amarillo, TX, Arthur G. and Cindy Harris of Fieldon, IL and Terry and Pam Harris of Brighton, IL; two brothers and their spouses: Gerald “Jerry” and Char Becker of East Alton, Richard and Marianne Becker of Taylors SC; and a sister-in-law, Betty Huber of Bethalto, IL and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband and five siblings: Lavere Becker, Esthlena Adcock, Fred “Nook” Becker, BernaLee Stevens and Gary Becker, one infant sister and a grandson, David Bennett. 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm, Friday, August 21, 2015 at the Elias Kallal and Schaaf funeral Home in Alton.

Funeral services will be at 10 am on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Friendship General Baptist Church in East Alton, IL with the Rev. Joe Fletcher officiating.

Burial will be at the East Newburn Bethal Cemetery in Dow, IL.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Village Assisted Living, 4601 Wesley Way, Godfrey, IL 62035. A fund has been established to purchase a memorial bench.
