Walter Bratten

Walter Bratten, age 93, of Edwardsville, died at 7:10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born April 10, 1922, in Edwardsville, the son of the late Maxwell and Minna Glaser Bratten. He married Ruby Lambert on Oct. 30, 1945, at Breezy Point Chapel Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Va. She preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters: Patricia Stanley of Alton and Bonny (Donald Ladd) of Edwardsville; one son: Michael (Barbara) Bratten of Troy; four brothers: George of Chula Vista, Calif., Robert of Moro, Samuel of Woodburn and Charles (Peggy) of Wood River; nine grandchildren: Andy, Angie, Nick, Melissa, Tom, Don, Ellora, Richard and Jessica and one great-grandchild: Alexander. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Helen Albrecht, Anna Farrell and Emma Kipp and two brothers: Emil "Bud" Bratten and William Bratten. Mr. Bratten was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 99 (Past Master, 1964), Royal Arch Mason (Past High Priest, 1964), Eastern Starr 667 (Past Worthy Patron, 1966) Scottish Rite Valley of Southern Illinois, Edwardsville Lions, Tin Can Sailors, the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, American Legion Post 199, Disabled American Veterans and was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1299. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw action at Guadalcanal. He was a U.S. Government inspector for more than 38 years. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Saksa Mateer Funeral Home. A Lions Club service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m., a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and a V.F.W. service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the funeral home. Internment will be in Liberty Prairie Cemetery in Edwardsville.
