Virginia Thomasson

Alton |

Virginia Lee (Sturgeon) Thomasson, 95, died at 2:36 pm Saturday March 15, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton.

Virginia was born on March 10, 1919 in Hillsboro, Illinois, to Leo and Orlene (Nesbit) Sturgeon.

She attended school in Hillsboro and graduated from Alton High School and Wells Business School.  She worked for M.C. Galloway Advertising Company and Sauvage Advertising Company, later at Owens Illinois Glass Company in the accounting department.

She married H. Leland Thomasson on May 23, 1943.  During WWII, she traveled in the western U.S. with him, and after the war settled in Alton.  She is survived by two daughters, Christina Poole and Ellen (Jill) Thomasson.  There is one grandson, Joseph Poole and his wife Shani, and great-grandchildren Keaton Poole and Nolan Poole.

Her parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Martha Sturgeon preceded her in death.

Virginia was a long–time member of Cherry Street Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and served on the Board of Diaconate.

She was a very sweet, caring person, willing to help when she could.  She collected for the March of Dimes.  She loved her family, enjoyed reading, sewing, crossword puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Lawrence Welk on T.V.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of one’s choice.

Per her request, there will be no visitation.  A family graveside service will be held at Upper Alton Cemetery with Pastor Gerald MeCaskey officiating.

Staten-Fine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
