Virgil Daniel Townsend, 73, entered into rest at 7:38 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born November 1, 1941 in Alton, IL, he was the son of Alfred D. and Gladys C. (Connoyer) Townsend.
A loving and devoted father and friend to many, he was a retired carpenter from Local #664.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his sons, Dan Townsend of Wood River, Frank (Sharon) Townsend of Godfrey; grandchildren, Dan, Jr., Alli and Marie all of Godfrey; brothers, Edward Townsend of West Alton, MO, Leonard Townsend of Hannibal, MO; sisters, Geraldine (Leon) Foeller of Florissant, MO, Gail Vaughn of Ft. Worth, TX and Betty (Frank) Coffman of Granite City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Melvin, Eugene and Richard Townsend; and a sister, Gloria Badalato.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Angels Parish Church in Wood River. Father James Flach will be celebrant.
Interment will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
