Vincent Henry Schroeder of Jerseyville died early Wednesday morning, December 24, 2014 at the age of 90
He was born on September 14, 1924, in Jersey County, the son of the late Henry and Mary (Meyer) Schroeder.
After graduating from Jersey Community High School, he began farming with his father. He volunteered for the Army in 1945 and served in Pennsylvania and New York. After discharge, he returned to farming with his father and brother Martin. He and Martin farmed together, first north of Jerseyville and later near Dow, for forty years, retiring in 1993.
He married Emily Wendle on September 18, 1947 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Beltrees. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed playing cards and golf with family and friends. He and Emily traveled extensively in the U.S. and to Europe.
He served on several boards, including the St. Francis Xavier Senate, Farmers Elevator and the Jersey County Extension. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, belonged to the American Legion Post 492, was a member of the Westlake Country Club, and a lifetime active member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville.
Surviving are his wife Emily, children and spouses Dan (Carlie) Schroeder of Glen Carbon, Jack (Babs) Schroeder of Osage, IA, Dale (Marsha) Schroeder of Grafton, Joann (Gary) Schell of Kirkwood, MO, Dina (Mark) Sackman of Jerseyville, and special nephews Don (Bonnie) Tungett of Godfrey and Terry Tungett of St. Louis. He and Emily have 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter Jean Schroeder, his brothers and their spouses Lawrence (Christine) Schroeder, Bernard (Mary and Marcella) Schroeder, Raymond (Margaret) Schroeder, Martin (Nell) Schroeder and sister Mary Margaret (Melvin) Becker.
Visitation will be at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville Sunday from 2 pm to 6 pm, December 28, 2014.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville at 10:00 am, Monday, December 29, 2014.
Burial will take place at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion conducting military rites.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Schools in Jerseyville or to Masses.
