Vesta Mennemeyer

Hartford |

Vesta Margurite (Heindricks) Mennemeyer, 97, passed away 5:27 p.m., Thursday, January 26, 2017 at her residence in Hartford, peacefully, surrounded by family.

Born November 9, 1919 in Olive Branch, she was the daughter of Ernest and Lula (Bryant) Heindricks.

On December 25, 1941, she married Clarence Joseph Mennemeyer. The couple remained lifelong residents of Hartford.  She served in her community as a leader for Brownie Troops, Girls and Boys Scouts of America; was an active with the United Methodist Church and 1st Baptist Church in Hartford, being baptized in Greenlake, WI by the Reverend Gary Ballard.

Vesta found joy working in her garden and canning her own vegetables, which she shared with friends and neighbors.  She was an avid quilter, winning first place in a local quilt show.  She enjoyed working puzzles - the more challenging, the better.

She is survived by her two children, Vesta "Kit" (Jim) Bradbury of Cottage Hills, A. Kent (Debbie) Mennemeyer of Caseyville; six grandchildren, Jamey Bradbury, Kyle Bradbury, Joseph (Rachel) Mennemeyer, Kelly (Jason) Abbett, Landon Mennemeyer, Zach Brown Mennemeyer; two great grandchildren, Emiley Abbett and Benjamin Mennemeyer; a sister, Leveda "Becky" Cook of Moro; several nieces and nephews, whom she loves; and an elder daughter, Nancy Marie, who removed herself from the family over 25 years ago and has not been heard from since, however, was loved deeply by her mother to the very end.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; four sisters, Opal Hayes, Neva Smiley, Netta Bennett and Loila "Lo" Pierce; and four brothers, August Englar, Wilfred, Alam and Edric Heindricks.

More than anything, Vesta will be remembered for her stories and her desire to stay active late into her life.  Her family takes comfort knowing that she enjoyed a relationship with Jesus Christ and will remain at his side in her eternal home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.  Revs. Ron Wenzel and Gary Ballard will officiate.

Burial will follow in Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or BJC Hospice.
