Vernis Miller

Vernis D. Miller, 90, passed away at 4:00 am Friday, February 27, 2015 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.   

He was born in Fieldon, IL, on April 21, 1924, the son of Donald and Florence (Geisler) Miller. 

He married Wanda Mitchell on July 4, 1946 in Jerseyville, IL.  She survives.

Vernis served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the infantry.  He went overseas on the Queen Mary in December 1944.  He was on the front line of the Battle of the Bulge for twenty one days, but was returned to the hospital for his feet being frozen.  Later he became an M.P. for the remainder of his service time. He was a cement finisher for the Cement Mason’s Local #90 for 30 years, until his retirement.  He was a former member of the Fieldon Masonic Lodge and currently the Bethalto Masonic Lodge 

In addition to his wife, he was survived by a a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Lisa Miller of Altamont, IL; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Steve Grizzle of Bethalto; five grandchildren and their spouses, Tommy (Amanda) Miller, Rick Miller, Molly Miller, Steve “Jimmy” Grizzle and Jenna (Ryan) Smith; one step grandson, Chauncey Kuhn; five great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Verle “Toad” Miller.   

Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Military rites will be given by Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to a Charity of One’s Choice.
