Sister Lucy Spinner, O.S.U., aka Anna Gertrude Spinner died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton , Illinois on Sunday, September 15, 2013. She was 104 years old. The daughter of Louis Spinner and Pauline Mast Spinner, she was born July 26, 1909, in Coffeen, Illinois. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cyril, Urban, and John and one sister, Matilda Frances, aka Sister Joseph Marie Spinner, O.S. U.
Sister Lucy attended high school at St. Teresa Academy in Decatur, Illinois, graduating in 1925, and entered the Ursuline in Decatur, Illinois, in 1927. She pronounced vows in Alton, Illinois in 1929. Fontbonne College in St. Louis granted her a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1957 and Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois granted her a Master’s Degree in Library Science in 1966. All of her years of service in teaching and school administration were in elementary schools in Decatur, Illinois, where she is well known for the countless young lives she influenced. Sr. Lucy spent 35 years at St. Patrick’s School and served 20 years at St. Thomas School. Sister retired to the Queen of Peace Community in Alton, Illinois, in 2003.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Ilinois. Visitation will precede this Mass beginning at 9:00 am. Reverend David Yankauskas, O.M.V. will preside.
Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
