Sister Mary Helen Archibald

Sister Mary Helen Archibald died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois, on  May 2, 2014.  The daughter of Thomas Archibald and Margaret Sands Archibald, she was born Catherine Elizabeth Archibald on October 27, 1920, in Lowell, Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Joseph, Thomas, George and Francis, and three sisters:  Margaret Archibald MacShane, Mary Archibald and Theresa Archibald Lewis.

Sister Mary Helen received her early education from Lowell High School in Lowell, Massachusetts.  She entered the Ursuline Sisters in Laredo, Texas, on July 24, l941 and made her vows on August 16, l943.  She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Arts Degree at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas.  She won awards for excellence as a primary teacher, serving in both Laredo and Galveston, Texas for over 65 years.  In 2006, she retired to join other Ursuline Sisters at St. Joseph Village Independent Retirement Center in Coppell, Texas, and in 2012, she joined the community at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 10:00 am in the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois.  Reverend  Steve Pohlman will preside.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 am at the Ursuline Convent.

Memorials may be made to the Queen of Peace Healthcare Center, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois, 62002.
