Ruby Nell Hale, 82, died at 9:08 a.m. Sunday, August 17, 2014 at her home in Godfrey. Born December 20, 1931 in Dalhart, Texas, she was the daughter of Dewey and Edna (Pettit) Babb. She married Russell J. Hale on December 27, 1949 in Alton. Together they owned several Amoco Service Stations in the area. During the 1960’s Mrs. Hale owned the first health food store in Alton called Hale’s Natural Foods. She was the originator of the Illinois Pure Water Committee, a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was very active in the Alton Toastmistress Club. She was an avid reader and writer. A compassionate and generous person, she also enjoyed talking with people and loved kids. She was a Christian woman and a member of the First Christian Church in Alton for over 50 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her husband preceded her in death on April 7, 1996.
Surviving are twin children, Mary Ann Karrick (Dan) of East Alton and Mark A. Hale of East Alton, two grandchildren, Sara Baggio (Nick) of Godfrey and Scott Bechtold (Jamie) of Jerseyville, four great-grandchildren, Emma and Eli Baggio, and Grace and Stella Bechtold, one brother, Gary Babb (Delores) of Woodward, OK, and a sister, Loretta Haney (Roland) of Spearman, TX. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Babb and a sister, Ethel “Tex” Wickenhauser.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 21, 2014. Jim Johnston will officiate.
Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
