Richard Doody

Alton |

Richard L. “Dick” Doody, 69, died at 4:10 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2015 at Blu Fountain Manor in Godfrey after a brief and valiant battle with his health.

He was born on May 25, 1945 in Hanover, PA , an only child born to the late Linwood and Margaret (Brown) Doody.

He grew up in Westminster, MD, graduating in 1963 from Westminster High School.

He married the former Stephanie DeGrand in October 1971 and together they were blessed with the joys of raising their four children.

Richard began his proud career with the United States Postal Service in 1970, working his first 20 years in Westminster before he and his family relocated to the Alton area where he remained for the past 24 years retiring in May 2011 after 42 years of dedicated and faithful service.

In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching his children’s various little league teams, bowling and tending to his meticulous garden. He enjoyed watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and in his later years, devoted most of his time to his work, where he made many lasting friendships and shared many stories around the table at DJ’s Bar & Grill.

Surviving are his four children, whom he was immensely proud of, Jenny Doody of Boulder City, NV; Kris Doody of Alton; Bobby Doody of Jerseyville; Maggie Doody of Alton; a granddaughter, Kearston; the mother of his children, Stephanie Doody of Alton and a devoted friend and co-worker, Jamie Nelson of Alton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a child in infancy.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Joel Lohr officiating.

Burial will take place at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hope Animal Rescues in care of the funeral home.

His family and friends will always remember his simple minded nature and his “unique” sense of humor, often off-color, but always amusing, a trait he held all the way to the end. His life was a blessing, and his memory will be treasured by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
