Melvin G. Balsters, 90, entered peacefully into Eternal Life with his Savior on March 24, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
He was born on the family farm homestead in Ft Russell Township south of Bethalto on August 17, 1922 to George W. and Ella W. (Schmidt) Balsters. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto.
Melvin married Verna R. Wiemers on September 15, 1946 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Prairietown. She survives.
Melvin considered himself to be a steward of the Lord's bountiful land. His entire life was devoted to agricultural pursuits, from being actively involved in his own farming operations in the Bethalto area, to serving in leadership capacities on various agricultural organizations like Lincoln Farm Business Farm Management, Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District, Madison County FSA and Madison Service Company. As a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served many years as the Assistant Financial Secretary and in several other positions.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by his son, Ken and his wife Sandra and a grandson, Brett; all of Bethalto. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Peggy Balsters, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold W. Balsters, several brother and sister in laws and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday, March 26 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Visitation will continue from 10:00 until funeral services at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto with Pastor Mark Hofferber officiating.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church United in Mission or school tuition fund and also to Alton Memorial Health Services Foundation fbo Alton Memorial Hospital.
