Melba L. Phelps

Melba L. Phelps, having just celebrated her 100th birthday, went to be with her heavenly Father, at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born July 12, 1913 in Carlinville, IL, she was the daughter of the late Harley and Viola (Sarginson) Nixon. Melba was a wonderful homemaker. Her hobby was collecting and reading cookbooks which inspired wonderful kitchen delights. She enjoyed raising vegetables and flowers. She loved her 38 years of volunteer work with the White Cross Auxiliary at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Godfrey for 62 years. On May 4, 1935 she married Clyde Phelps in Chesterfield, IL. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1978. Surviving are three children, Jerry J. Phelps Sr. (Claudette) of Godfrey, Martha A. Raby (Rayford) of Brighton, and Margie E. Graham (Danny) of Fosterburg, three grandchildren, Lisa Delaney (Chris) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jerry Phelps Jr. of Godfrey, and Lisa Spencer (Brad) of Fosterburg, 10 great grandchildren, Amanda Boyd, Clyde Jacob Phelps, Natalie, Nicholas, and Benjamin McCullough, Tessa Delaney, Macie, Morgan, Noah, and Claire Spencer. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Lucille Phelps, a granddaughter, Vicky Vaught, a brother, Myron “Bud” Nixon, and a sister, Ruby Long. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of memorial service at 12:00 noon Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate. Private burial will be held at Loomis Cemetery in Chesterfield, IL. Memorials may be made to the Prayer Garden or the Organ Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Godfrey.
