Maurice Means

East Alton |

Maurice Kenneth Means, 86, died at 10:52 a.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born February 14, 1929 in Alton, he was the son of Lourn Thomas and Lula (Kercher) Means. He served in the U.S. Army and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1308. He worked for Colonial Bakery and Shell Oil Company for 48 years, retiring in 1991. He married Geraldine Crews and she preceded him in death on August 13, 1972. On February 14, 1975 he married the former Shirley Bailey in Wood River. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Carol Osburn of East Alton, two sons, Mark Thomas Means (Evelyn) of Conroy, Iowa, and Scott Allen Means of East Alton, one grandchild, Nicholas Osburn (Stephanie) of East Alton and a brother, Harold Means of Alton. Along with his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lourn Thomas Means Jr., Eugene Means, and Leroy Means, and three sisters, Evelyn Seal, Peggy Woodman, and Ruth Hellemeyer. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2015. Reverend Pam Laing will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church in Wood River.
