Mary L. Betts Sivia Overmeyer, 93, passed away at 3:45 pm Sunday, December 7, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton.
She was born on September 16, 1921 in Tamms, IL, the daughter of Lark J. & Mary Lillian (Schilling)
Betts.
She married Alfred Sivia on April 15, 1944 in Medford, OR. He preceded her in death in 1959. She then married James W. Overmeyer on June 29, 1973 in Meadowbrook and he preceded her in death in 1988.
Mary represented the courage and steadfastness of her amazing generation. At times she was bent by the challenges of life but never broken. Never one to waste or to give in to extravagance, Mary was always thankful for what she had. A loving mother, she nurtured her family and always put their needs before her own. A devoted and loyal friend to many. Always honest and open with firm pats on the back during a hug or a slight tummy rub if she thought you had put on a few pounds. Mary was secure with who she was and never put on airs. Sweet, strong, tender and loving. Her life was full, long and rich, and she left an indelible impression on the many she touched. Mary’s ever-present and beautiful smile was evidence of a joyful and content soul.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Bernard Corno of O’Fallon, MO and Sue and Keith Lingle of Bethalto; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Marcia Sivia of Alton, and a son-in-law, Donald Eaker of Bethalto; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Renee and Steve Lewis, Marilyn and Greg Warren, Stacy and Doug Welsh, Christy and Tyler Schaper, Todd and Rebecca Sivia, Kelly and Craig Wooten, Molly and Justin Peters and Katie Lingle; fourteen great grandchildren, her siblings, Wesley Betts of Moro, Carmelita Betts of Edwardsville, Bernelda Burney of Wood River, Alta Smith of Carbondale, IL and Edna Gold of Wood River and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Eaker; sisters, Nevieth Betts, Leona M Roach, Vernettia Henderson and brothers, Charles Betts, Robert Betts, Dwight Schilling, Lark Betts, John Betts, Clifford Betts.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be at 11 am on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the funeral home with Pastor Jonathan Absher officiating.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
