Mary Fleming

Mary “Kitty” Fleming, 88, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 11:45 am, at OSF St. Clare Hospital in Alton.

She was born on May 20, 1926 in Kerens, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Clifton Mason and Mary Elizabeth (Bennett) Waybright. She married Edward Earl Fleming in February of 1944.

She was owner and operator of Kitty’s Grocery on Milton Rd. in Alton. Kitty was a member of Order of The Eastern Star, Daughters of The Nile, and the Jesterettes,. She was also a Red Hat Lady. Kitty often volunteered at the Caravan Shop.

She is survived by four children and their spouses, Sharon and Bob Wyne of Funkstown, MD, Charles Fleming, Richard and Tracy Fleming of Lake Worth, FL, and Jim Fleming, and his wife, Kate Mahanes, of Afton, VA; two sisters, Betty Ash of Orlando, FL, and Virginia Knight of Baltimore, MD; eight grandchildren; a step-grandchild; eleven great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Myra Morrison of Spartanburg, SC.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Earl; three sisters; and four brothers.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 8, 2015, from 3:00 to 6:30 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. The Daughters of The Nile will perform burial rites at 3:30 pm.

A private family burial will be held in Upper Alton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children of St. Louis, MO.
